FAQ
PREMISE
-How does my character arrive?
All characters enter Earth through an "Emergence," a massive dimensional fluctuation that drops them into the middle of a chaotic battle. Surrounded by Aegis forces, they will be caught in a massive battle with huge Astral Beasts that arrive with them. During this initial Emergence event, your character has full access to the scope of their powers due to the still unstable laws of reality.
-What happens to my character when they arrive?
Once the Astral Beasts have been defeated, your character is able to connect with Aegis and will be brought into custody. Defeating the Astral Beasts closes the rift, which means all highly advanced technology and magic abilities immediately become extremely unstable. Under Aegis's direction, your character is given the opportunity to join this organization, the Aegis Initiative, which is attempting to find a way to send all of the Sliders home and combat the alien threat on Earth.
-Exactly what is the Aegis Initiative?
The Aegis Initiative is a UN-sanctioned and funded paramilitary organization tasked with maintaining the Sliders, combating anything dangerous that comes through the rifts, and, most recently, fighting the organized alien forces that are attacking humanity.
-Am I required to intro my character in an Emergence event?
No, Emergence events occur every few weeks and you have the option to intro your character during such an event if you wish. If not, your character is assumed to have arrived on Earth earlier and was either on a smaller partner base in another country or was attempting to integrate into human society, uninvolved with Aegis. Characters who intro in this manner will still start with all their powers sealed; the Vigilance base is the only base with the resources to restore abilities.
-Why aren't powers/technology working right? Can that be fixed?
Characters are brought into what is for all intents and purposes, ordinary Earth, although the appearance of the rifts have begun awakening supernatural abilities. As such, the powers and high-level technology don't work as they normally would in their own world - Earth's laws of physics are literally rejecting ultra advanced technology and magic powers. As a guideline, anything that runs off unnatural or nonexistent items such as "Minovsky particles" or "Unobtanium" counts as advanced technology, whereas something that can at least theoretically be duplicated by real-world science in current day or near future is allowable. The main Aegis base in Vigilance has a dedicated laboratory to unlocking the secrets of these powers and technologies. Over the course of the game, you can regain access to most, if not all of your abilities. For more information, check the Power Naturalization post.
-What if my character requires a power/technology to exist or survive? What if my character is a wholly supernatural being like a ghost?
Powers and technology that are required for your character's continued existence will remain intact on Earth. Characters that exist as ghosts or spirits in canon will remain dead and will not age, but will be fully corporeal and visible upon first arrival. This is the best compromise the laws of reality will allow. Research will be required for standard ghost abilities like intangibility.
-What does my character bring with them?
Anything they have with them at the time they are sucked into a rift and tossed onto Earth. If they are at the time riding in a vehicle or accompanied by a companion or other close ally that would not themselves be an appable character, the vehicle or companion may also be brought along for the ride.
-My companion is a supernatural creature; what happens to them?
Companion characters, such as Digimon or Pokemon, can be brought along with the character as they enter Earth. They will retain their full shape, features, and intelligence, but all of their supernatural abilities (any special attacks, evolution capabilities, etc) will be sealed or otherwise unstable. They'll still be able to run, jump, climb, and even fly if they are winged creatures that fly under their own power, but their supernatural abilities will be locked. Incidentally, the same applies if the character you wish to play is such a creature.
-What can my character do during downtime?
Aegis's base is located in the recently constructed city of Vigilance, moderately sized and possessing of a number of amenities. For more information, please check out the City's info page.
-My character isn't a combatant! What can they do?
Noncombatant characters are able to take on a number of other necessary roles to Aegis's operation. Other major roles include positions in Diplomacy and Research and Development. All events will be constructed to provide both combatants and noncombatants ample means to participate.
-What happens if my character dies?
Currently, character death is permanent in Aegis, and a dead character must be dropped. However, with the current level of cellular regeneration technology, characters who do not actually die can eventually be healed.
-What happens to dropped characters?
Dropped characters can be handled any number of ways: they can choose to leave Aegis and attempt to integrate into normal society, they can be transferred to one of the other bases, they could fall into a rift and be returned to their home world, or they could be killed or go MIA.
-I want to app a dropped or killed character, can I do that?
Yes! If a character is visibly killed on-screen they may still be apped. They will be considered an "alternate universe" version of the character in terms of the narrative even if they are functionally the same OU character. If the character was killed or dropped in a way that was not a visibly on-screen death, they may be re-apped with past knowledge from the game if desired, or they may return with no memories at all and be a different version of the character at your prerogative.
-Can I canon update?
Yes, you may! Just post in the Canon Update post with a description of your canon update. Once a mod approves it, your character will vanish from the base and return on the next Emergence event, canon updated.
-How is communication handled?
All operatives are issued a military-grade smartphone. It has most of the features of a regular smartphone but with stronger encryption and some extra apps.
-Is there a Universal Translator?
Currently, there is not. When characters arrive on Earth their personal language is, if necessary, automatically converted to an existing world language. Since Aegis is a UN-sanctioned organization, you will have access to the best translators and translation technology on your smartphones available while you acclimate. You are welcome to play with this concept as much or as little as you wish; the opt-out, of course, is to assume that your character's native language is naturally converted to English.
APPLICATIONS
-How many characters may I play at one time? How many per canon?
There is currently no limit on the amount of characters you may play at any given time, so long as you can meet activity requirements for all of them. You may not play more than 2 characters per canon, and the characters must have minimal to no canon interaction with each other (you could not play two characters who are siblings and work together, for example.)
-May I app AUs? What kinds?
You may app any number of AUs, including Aegis setting AUs, canon AUs, and original AUs. However, all AUs must follow specific criteria. For more information on AUs please see the Application post.
-May I app characters with previous game history (CRAUs)?
Yes, you may! However, characters cannot retain any abilities or items they acquire in another game; they may only come with abilities and items possessed by their normal canon incarnation.
-May I app OCs? What about fandom OCs?
OCs and fandom OCs are both allowed, but fandom OCs cannot have any CR with existing canon characters in their backstory.
-May I app a double of a character already in the game?
You may app an AU version of an existing character, but it is requested that you check with the current player before doing so. Also, as with all AUs, they will be subject to specific rules as outlined in the Application post.
GENERAL
-I want/need to drop or hiatus. How do I do that?
Please post your drop or hiatus in the Drop Post or the Hiatus Post.
-What are the activity check requirements?
Activity requirements are 10 comments by your character a month. These comments can be obtained in any combination available. A post counts as 5 comments, as does an AIM mission log.
-Are AIM chats required?
No they are not. They are optional for certain kinds of scenes.
-What is the format used for AIM logs?
We use a number of symbols and conventions to make AIM logs run smoothly. Please refer to the AIM Log Post for more details.

Rules
Our desire for Aegis Initiative is to create an inclusive community where people can have fun, be awesome, and shoot some aliens (right in the face). As such, we have some rules we expect to be followed.
-All players are to treat each other with respect and courtesy. This is non-negotiable; this game is open to all who can meet the standards of our application process, maintain our required activity level, and positively contribute to the game. We certainly don't expect you to like or play with everyone, but we expect politeness, if nothing else. Harassment, personal attacks, or other behavior with the express purpose of making someone feel bad or otherwise unwanted will not be tolerated. The moderator team will not police personal interactions outside of the game nor act as mediators in disputes, but our expectation is both that players respect each other and that if there are issues, players will work them out among themselves in a mature and respectful manner. Personal attacks, harassment, and other negative behavior against other players will not be tolerated and can result in suspension or banning from the community.
-Do not force other players or characters into unwanted situations, or use out-of-character knowledge as in-character knowledge. Often known as "god-modding" and "metagaming", these actions are unacceptable in a freeform roleplay. Nothing is more frustrating than having certain actions or interactions forced upon you by another player or character, or to have your carefully laid plots spoiled by other players using knowledge their character shouldn't have to foil your plot. Please don't do it.
-All moderator decisions are final. We welcome discussion and are open to questions regarding our decisions and are happy to provide clarification, decisions are not up to argument or debate.
-Remain in character. It is natural for characters to grow and change, but it is expected that players will generally be consistent to the personality and samples submitted, as well as the established personality of the canon character (when applicable).

Also what kind of character is considered too powerful?
no subject
Regarding too powerful, the main abilities that are problematic are time travel, dimensional travel, and the ability to unleash nuclear weapon-scale devastation at will. The former two won't be unlocked, the latter will likely have some restrictions in place.

The only Senshi who would have problems for example is Pluto and she's not supposed to use her time stop anyway.
EDIT: Amendment Saturn would also get slapped with the nerf bat for her world-destroying shtick.

Thanks for the clarification! On a further questioning front, does that mean that if the research has been done for ONE, the rest of them can then transform straight away once arriving? Or is it an assumption that each of their transformations differ enough that research will be needed for all? (I assume that their ACTUAL individual elemental abilities will need to be researched separarely regardless?).
